Car won't start after installing the XPRO dash cam?
If your car needed a jump start after XPRO was installed, you're in the right place. Four short checks — about 10 minutes, no tools, no technical background, and nothing that asks you to risk another flat battery.
Is this your situation?
A short time after installing XPRO — often the very next morning — your vehicle wouldn't start and needed a jump start. The dash cam itself worked normally while driving, and once you disconnected it, the vehicle started again as usual.
You're likely in the right place if…
- The dash cam records and works normally while you drive.
- After the vehicle sits parked for several hours (usually overnight), it won't start or cranks weakly and needs a jump.
- Disconnecting the dash cam brings everything back to normal.
- Nothing else on the vehicle was changed — no wires were cut or moved, and the only connection is the one at the rearview mirror.
What is usually behind it: in most cases the dash cam keeps drawing a small amount of power after the vehicle is switched off. Over one night, that trickle can be enough to drain the 12V auxiliary battery — the small battery that powers the vehicle's electronics.
Why hybrid vehicles notice it first: on a hybrid such as the RAV4 Hybrid, the 12V battery is smaller than on a conventional gasoline car, because it mainly wakes up and powers the electronics rather than cranking the engine. There is less reserve available for accessories while parked. This is normal for the vehicle, and it does not mean your installation was wrong.
Before you start
No special preparation is needed — just keep these three things at hand.
- XPRO installed and the AKEEYO app on your phone, so you can connect to XPRO's Wi-Fi.
- You know where the XPRO indicator light is — your quick start guide shows it.
- Your phone, so you can take a photo or short video of the light in Step 3.
Two things worth knowing before you start
- If the vehicle won't start right now, jump-start it and drive for a while so the 12V battery recovers, then come back to these checks. Please don't jump-start it several times in a row.
- If you need to leave the vehicle parked for a long time before you finish Step 3, simply disconnect XPRO first. There's no need to risk a second flat battery just to complete a check.
Step-by-step checks
They run from the most common cause down to the most specific check. Work through them in order — no step asks you to leave the vehicle parked overnight to see what happens.
1 Reconnect XPRO exactly as before
If you disconnected XPRO, reconnect the single mirror connection exactly as described in the installation guide — no other wiring changes. If XPRO is still connected, just switch the vehicle on and move to Step 2.
Open the AKEEYO app and check that it connects to XPRO and the live picture appears. If it does, the camera is powered and connected correctly.
If it doesn't connect, unplug and reseat the connector once, then try again. Still nothing? Contact us before going further.
2 Turn off Parking Monitoring in the app
With XPRO connected, open the AKEEYO app and find Parking Monitoring in the settings. If it is switched on, switch it off.
If it was on, this is almost always the answer — the camera keeps recording after the vehicle is off, and that is what drains the 12V battery overnight. If it was already off, that's useful to know too: it means the camera itself may not be powering down, which Step 3 will confirm.
Leave Parking Monitoring off. XPRO keeps working normally while you drive — only the parked recording stops. If you'd like Parking Monitoring back later, contact us first and we'll advise based on your vehicle.
3 Lock the vehicle and check the light after 5 minutes
Switch the vehicle off, lock it, and wait about 5 minutes without opening a door. Then look at the XPRO indicator light — take a photo or a short video if that's easy for you.
If the light goes off within about 5 minutes, the camera has shut down and is no longer drawing power from the vehicle — that's exactly the state you want. If it is still on after 5 minutes, the camera is not powering down, and it will keep draining the battery while the vehicle is parked.
Which happened?
You're all set. The camera shuts down properly, so it is no longer drawing power from your vehicle. Carry on to Step 4.
Don't keep testing. Disconnect XPRO so your vehicle stays reliable, then contact us — tell us the light was still on 5 minutes after locking. That single detail is enough for our team to act.
4 Go back to using XPRO as normal
Drive and park exactly as you normally would. There is nothing to test and no routine to change.
If the vehicle has started normally since Step 3, there is nothing more you need to do — the parked power draw was the cause, and it is now resolved.
If the vehicle ever fails to start again, disconnect XPRO first and contact us with the checklist in section 4. One report is enough — you won't be asked to repeat these checks.
Still not resolved?
If the light stayed on in Step 3, or the vehicle has failed to start again since, there's no need to repeat the checks on your own. Do this instead — one report with the details below is enough for us to act.
- Leave XPRO disconnected for now so your vehicle stays reliable.
- Reply to your order confirmation or the email thread with our support team, and mention “XPRO battery drain” in the subject.
- Include the details below so we can help in one round instead of several:Order numberVehicle make, model and year (e.g. 2023 RAV4 Hybrid)How XPRO is connected — which connector it draws power fromWhen the battery drained, how long the vehicle had been parked, and how often it happenedWhether Parking Monitoring was on at the timeWhether the indicator light went off within 5 minutes of lockingApp and firmware version, if you can see them
- What happens next: our technical team reviews the details and comes back to you with the next step — a replacement, a firmware update, or a setup adjustment, depending on what the information shows.
Thank you for working through this with us. Details from real vehicles like yours are what help us make XPRO better for everyone.
Common questions
Why did my battery go flat after installing the dash cam?
In most cases the camera kept drawing a small amount of power after the vehicle was switched off — usually because Parking Monitoring was switched on. Over one night, that trickle can be enough to drain the 12V auxiliary battery.
Why did this happen on my hybrid?
The 12V battery on a hybrid such as the RAV4 Hybrid is smaller than the one in a conventional gasoline car, because it mainly powers and wakes up the electronics rather than cranking the engine. That leaves less reserve for accessories while parked. It doesn't mean anything is wrong with your vehicle.
Is my installation wrong?
Usually not. If the camera works normally while driving, and the vehicle behaves normally again once the camera is disconnected, the installation is very likely correct.
Will the camera still record while I drive if Parking Monitoring is off?
Yes. Parking Monitoring only covers recording while the vehicle is parked — normal recording while driving is not affected.
How do I know the camera has really shut down?
Switch the vehicle off, lock it, wait about 5 minutes and check the indicator light. If it goes out within about 5 minutes, the camera has shut down and is no longer drawing power from the vehicle.
