A custom-fit dash cam only works if it actually fits. That sounds obvious, but it is where most RAV4 owners get tripped up.
The 2019–2025 Toyota RAV4 uses two different plastic housings behind the rearview mirror. They look similar from the driver's seat. They are not interchangeable. Order the wrong version of a custom-fit camera and it will not clip in, no matter how careful you are with the trim tool.
The good news: telling them apart takes about ten seconds and no tools. This guide shows you exactly what to look for, which AKEEYO XPRO version matches each housing, and what to do if you are still not sure.
Why can't I just go by my RAV4's model year?
Because Toyota did not switch housings on a clean date.
Across 2019–2025, the mirror housing design changed, but the change did not line up neatly with a single model year. It varies by year, trim, and market. Two 2023 RAV4s from different regions or trims can have different housings. That is why AKEEYO offers the XPRO in two versions and asks you to match by the housing itself, not by the year on your registration.
Model year is still useful as a starting point. Here is how the two versions break down:

How to recognize the housing |

Without Vents |
Select 2019–2024 RAV4 models, plus the 2022 RAV4 Prime |
No visible vent openings on the plastic housing |
|
With Vents |
Select 2022–2025 RAV4 models |
Visible vent openings on the plastic housing |
Notice the overlap. A 2022, 2023, or 2024 RAV4 could go either way. If your car falls in that range, the housing check below is not optional.

The left one is the version without vents and the right is the version with vents.
How do I check which mirror housing my RAV4 has?
Sit in the driver's seat and look up at the base of the rearview mirror, where it meets the windshield. You are looking at the plastic cover that surrounds the mirror mount and hides the electronics behind it.
Step 1: Look for vent openings.
Some housings have visible slots or openings molded into the plastic. Others are smooth with no openings at all. This is the single detail that separates the two versions.
Step 2: Compare the overall shape.
The two housings also differ in shape. AKEEYO’s Toyota RAV4 Compatibility Guide has a reference photo for each version. Hold up your phone, pull up the guide, and compare your housing to both images.
Step 3: Take a photo.
Even if you are confident, snap a clear, well-lit photo of the housing. You will want it if you need to double-check, and it takes five seconds.
That is the whole check. No panel removal, no measuring.
Which XPRO version should I order?
Once you know your housing:
- No vent openings → order the Without Vents version (2019–2024 + 2022 Prime).
- Visible vent openings → order the With Vents version (2022–2025).
Both versions can be selected directly from the compatibility guide, right below the matching reference photo.
Both versions are the same camera inside. Same Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 sensor, same 4K 30fps recording, same F1.08 aperture, same $289 price, same plug-in installation. The only difference is the housing shape that clips into your RAV4.
What if I'm still not sure which version fits?
Ask before you order. It is faster than a return.
Email a clear photo of the plastic housing behind your rearview mirror to help@akeeyo.com, and include three things:
- Your RAV4's model year
- Your trim level (LE, XLE, Limited, Prime, and so on)
- Your country
The AKEEYO team will confirm the correct version for your car. This matters most for 2022–2024 owners, where both housings are in circulation.
What happens during installation?
Knowing your housing type also tells you what the install involves, because the XPRO replaces that housing cover entirely.
- Remove the original cover. Use the included trim tool to gently pop off the plastic housing cover. Work slowly so the factory clips stay intact.
- Connect and tuck the cable. Plug the included power adapter into the connection near the mirror and tuck the cable inside the XPRO housing.
- Fit the XPRO. Align it with the mirror area, press it into place, start the car, and confirm recording in the AKEEYO app.
For standard driving recording, that is everything. No drilling, no cutting, no wire splicing, no cable down the A-pillar. The full step-by-step, with photos, is in the XPRO Installation Guide. If you later want parking monitoring, that requires an optional ACC Hardwire Kit or OBD Power Cable, but the base install stays the same.
The original housing cover goes in a drawer. If you ever sell the RAV4, remove the XPRO and clip the factory cover back on.
The ten-second check that saves a return
Look up. Vents or no vents. Match the photo. Order the right version.
A custom-fit dash cam is supposed to make your life simpler, and it will, as long as the first step is done right. Check the housing before you buy, and everything after that is a four-minute job.
